How NOT to conduct an Urbex - Part One
[info]perthurbex
We at Perthurbex always stress the importance of using the correct gear for the task at hand...

We discovered to our detriment that a Ford Falcon Ute is NOT correct gear to use when trying to explore a site that requires traverse of near swampy terrain...

I don't think the Roadside Assist covers this sort of thing )

Kwinana Radar Station

Today, Jethro and I investigated a site that had been on our to-do list for so long that we had forgotten about it. The Kwinana Air-Warning Radar Station.

This facility was setup and operated during WWII as a part of the widespread defence of the region. All that remains now are the solid concrete enclosures that housed the machinery required to operate the radar systems and one section of tower remains.

Personnel where billeted in accomodations in an area that now comprises a local golf course, in fact the golf clubhouse is believed to have been the former Officer's mess.

After our Point Peron excursion, Jethro and I conducted a scout of an old Dairy Farm on the outskirts of Rockingham.

Setup in the 1920's, the farm was part of a scheme by the the WA government of the time to increase agriculture and provide employment for returned soldiers from WWI

The South Fremantle Power Station & Tunnels - Finale
[info]perthurbex
What an absolute disappointment, we finally got all the way down and just as the tunnels promised into something good, we found that the authorities had deliberately collapsed the only entrance tunnel and barricaded it. 2 inches of steel plate and at least 40 tonnes of sand and rock can put an end to your fun real damn fast.

On the bright side, we got some lovely shots of the main facility floor in the rain, and inducted two new members.

So welcome and thanks to Heritor and Erin...

Last time we show this place for a while folks, we promise )

South Fremantle Power Station - The Tunnels

Okay, this can be considered a teaser. As I mentioned in a previous post, we went in, but had company and had to withdraw our expedition for safety reasons.

These are the photos we took while we where down there, expect to see a lot more in future

Are you ready?

and down we go... )

Woodman Point Munitions Facility
[info]perthurbex
After our stint at South Perth Power Station, Jethro and I investigated this former military logistics site. The facility covers quite a large area and is designated a national park now. Old growth Tuart trees and mallee scrub now dominate the area and some of the bunkers are almost invisble now.

South Fremantle Power Station - The Second Visit

Post by: Shirtninja

Exploiting a break in the rough weather, Jethro and I returned to South Fremantle Power Station today. We only made a brief foray into the tunnels as we had some guests with us. A lovely couple from Singapore we met outside the facility. They wanted to go in but didn't know how, so we led them around. Thier excitement was certainly infectious, but as they had inadequate gear with them we had to keep reigning them in some.
fun = good, safety = better

Stay tuned for a return to the tunnels

We made a few new discoveries this trip though. We found a way to get into a large cable run, which gave us some incredible views of the main floor. I also took some additional photos of the seawater cooling pools within the building, after all this time, they are still tidal. I am hoping one day we can get to the site at high tide, I would say that the cooling ponds outside and inside would be full to the brim and it should be spectacular.

Due to the favourable response last time, we have taken even more photos of that famous staircase.

Rest assured folks, we aren't just one-trick ponies, we will be presenting other sites
(As soon as we can kick the addiction to this one)

Anyways, onto the photos )

Bloody Weather

Looks like heavy storm weather all this weekend, no exped for us :(

Welcome
[info]perthurbex
Hey there, welcome to the Journal for PerthUrbex. We are a collective of Perth Residents devoted to collecting photo records of abandoned buildings and public works in the region of Perth, Western Australia.

Western Australia is currently one of the fastest growing regions in the world. With the large increase in state revenue and the influx of people due to the resources boom (mining), WA - especially Perth - is amid a frenzy of development. Unfortunately, this development often leads to the demolition of historic sites and the occurence of sprawl.

Please come back regularly, as we intend to record a lot of sites, you may be surprised at what we find.

On Sunday 21st June, Jethro and I made our first foray into this amazing building. We plan to return as the building also houses several below-ground levels.

Since it's closure, the site has earned a somewhat dark reputation. Before Western Power removed the internal stairways, the site was a hotspot for suicides (People would climb to the top of the 5 storey complex and jump). 4 murders have also taken place in the lower levels of the building.
